AITSL Skills Assessment for Teachers Migrating to Australia

AITSL, the Australian Institute for Teaching and School Leadership, is the designated assessing authority for school teacher occupations under Australia’s skilled migration program.
The AITSL skills assessment Australia covers overseas teachers whose qualifications need to be verified against Australian standards before they can apply for a skilled migration visa. Moreover, without a positive assessment outcome, teachers cannot submit an Expression of Interest through SkillSelect or receive a state nomination.
What Is AITSL and What Role Does It Play in Teacher Migration?
AITSL sets and promotes national standards for teaching and school leadership across Australia. In the migration context, its role is more specific; it evaluates whether the teaching qualifications of overseas applicants meet the standard required for school teacher occupations in Australia.
The AITSL teachermigration assessment is not the same as teacher registration. Registration allows you to practise as a teacher in a specific state or territory. The AITSL skills assessment simply confirms that your academic background qualifies you to apply for a teacher migration visa. Furthermore, you need both the AITSL assessment for the visa and state registration to actually work in a classroom after you arrive.
AITSL also does not assess work experience. This surprises many applicants. Additionally, the number of years you have taught makes no difference to the skills assessment outcome; the evaluation is entirely based on your academic qualifications and your supervised teaching practice record.
Teacher Occupations Covered by the AITSL Assessment
AITSL handlesskills assessments for school teacher occupations only. It does not cover TESOL, TEFL, or ESL qualifications unless these form part of a broader initial teacher education program.
Occupation | ANZSCO Code | Level |
Early Childhood (Pre-primary School) Teacher | 241111 | Pre-school and kindergarten |
Primary School Teacher | 241213 | Foundation to Year 6 |
Middle School Teacher | 241311 | Years 7 to 10 – varies by state |
Secondary School Teacher | 241411 | Years 7 to 12 |
Special Education Teacher | 241511 | Students with disabilities |
Teacher of the Hearing Impaired | 241512 | Hearing impairment specialist |
Teacher of the Visually Impaired | 241513 | Vision impairment specialist |
Special Needs Teacher (nec) | 241599 | Other specialist roles |
AITSL cannot direct you toward a specific occupation. You choose the one that best matches your teaching qualification. However, the qualification must genuinely relate to theoccupation you nominate; choosing a mismatched occupation is one of the most common reasons applications receive a negative outcome.
AITSL Qualification Requirements: What You Must Have
The AITSL qualification requirements apply to every applicant regardless of the teaching occupation they choose. Two core criteria must be satisfied before an application can proceed to assessment.
Criterion 1: Minimum Four Years of Tertiary Study
You must have completed at least four years of full-time tertiary study, or the part-time equivalent, at university level. This study must result in a qualification at bachelor’s degree level or higher under the Australian Qualifications Framework. Furthermore, the four years do not need to come from a single qualification. A combination of degrees counts, provided each individual qualification is at least at the Advanced Diploma level or above.
Criterion 2: Initial Teacher Education Qualification
Your study must include a recognised initial teacher education qualification. This qualification must prepare you specifically for a school teaching role, not just a content area. Secondly, if you are applying for a special education occupation, the minimum study time in the specific area should be one year full-time and supervised teaching with students will have you teach.
Supervised Teaching Practice
There is a requirement for supervised teaching practice in schools on the initial teacher education qualification. A minimum of 45 days of supervised classroom practice should be demonstrated in application for mainstream school teacher occupation. This must be documented with official evidence from your institution. A declaration from you alone does not satisfy this requirement.
English Language Requirements for professional Assessment
The English requirement is where many experienced teachers face unexpected difficulties. You will need Academic IELTS results only from AITSL (General Training, PTE, and any other English tests are not accepted).
Component | Minimum Score Required |
Reading | 7.0 |
Writing | 7.0 |
Speaking | 8.0 |
Listening | 8.0 |
These scores are significantly higher than the standard visa English requirements. Furthermore, IELTS results must come from a test taken within the 24 months before the application submission date. Results older than two years are not accepted.
You may be exempt from the English test if you completed at least four years of tertiary study at an institution in Australia, Canada, the Republic of Ireland,New Zealand, the United Kingdom, or the United States of America, and that study included a recognised initial teacher education qualification. However, even with the study exemption, you earn no additional English points for the visa unless you sit the IELTS test and achieve the required scores.
Documents You Need for Your teaching Application
Incomplete applications are the main cause of delays. AITSL doesn’t offer a fast-track assessment service. Consequently, every document needs to be correct and complete before you submit; there is no way to accelerate the process after the fact.
- Official academic transcripts for all higher education qualifications you are claiming
- Final award certificates or testamurs, or a confirmation of completion if you are a recent graduate
- Evidence of supervised teaching practice, official letter or documentation from your institution
- Academic IELTS test results, unless you qualify for the study exemption
- Proof of identity, passport biographical page
- Australian teacher registration number, if you already hold provisional or fullregistration
All documents not in English need certified translations. Additionally, AITSL uses the My eQuals platform for verification of Australian and New Zealand academic records. If your institution uses My eQuals, share your documents directly through the platform rather than uploading scanned copies.
The AITSL Assessment Process and What Happens After Submission
AITSL processes applications in the order they arrive. Assessment-ready applications are typically completed within four weeks. However, applications with missing documents, unclear evidence, or qualification issues take considerably longer.
After Submission
Once AITSL receives your application, the assessment team reviews your qualifications against the criteria for your nominated teaching occupation. If they need additional documents, they send a formal request through the applicant portal. All additional documents must be uploaded together in one submission; piecemeal uploads cause further delays.
The Outcome
The AITSL assessment outcome arrives through the My eQuals platform as a formal outcome statement. A suitable outcome means your qualifications meet Australian standards for your nominated occupation. Furthermore, this outcome statement is valid for two years from the date of issue. Consequently, if you have not lodged your visa application within that period, you need to reapply.
An unsuitable outcome includes the specific reasons for the decision. You can request clarification by email, and if you still disagree after receiving clarification, you have 60 days from the outcome date to lodge a formal appeal. An appeal fee applies.
Skilled Employment Statement: The Optional Extra Step
After receiving a positive skills assessment, teachers can request an optional Skilled Employment Statement from AITSL. This is a separate document that summarises your relevant skilled teaching employment and supports the points test for skilled migration.
TheSkilled Employment Statement does not affect your assessment outcome. However, it can add points to your Expression of Interest if you have worked in a closely related teaching occupation before or after your qualification. Moreover, more points generally mean a higher invitation score in SkillSelect selection rounds.
Why teaching Applications Get Rejected
Most unsuccessful applications share the same avoidable problems.
- Occupation mismatch: The nominated occupation does not clearly relate to the teaching qualification submitted. AITSL cannot direct you to a different occupation; the application simply receives a negative outcome.
- Supervised teaching practice not adequately documented: A statutory declaration or personal statement does not substitute for official institutional evidence. Furthermore, the teaching practice must be in a school setting; kindergarten placements do not count for primary or secondary occupations.
- Qualifications below the required level: Diploma level qualification will not be seen as a four year degree. Short-course teaching certificates cannot be considered regardless of how many years post graduate experience.
- IELTS scores below the threshold: Speaking and Listening required 8.0-many experienced English speaking teachers would not meet this standard. Ensure you are preparing for Academic IELTS not General Training.
- Documents certified incorrectly: Uncertified copies or translations from non-approved sources are not accepted. Moreover, AITSL requires institutional evidence rather than self-certified copies for academic records.
How CDR Australia Writer Supports Your Teaching Application
The focus of the AITSL application is on academic credentials rather than reports written about competencies, but teachers seeking skilled migration visas must have documentation requiring specific preparation in terms of theirstatement of purpose, and proof of the plan for achieving the language benchmark.
CDR Australia Writer assists skilled migrants across all trades and occupations, including those seeking migration on teaching credentials under the AITSL path. Furthermore, our team helps applicants understand which documents they need, how to structure their visa supporting materials, and how to position their application for the strongest possible points score in SkillSelect.
The teacher skills assessment Australia process through AITSL is straightforward when you understand the criteria clearly. However, many teachers submit incomplete applications or choose the wrong occupation code, mistakes that result in a negative outcome and months of delay. Getting professional guidance before you submit saves both time and the reassessment fee.
Final Thoughts
The AITSL assessment is a qualifications-based process. Your years of teaching experience do not influence the outcome. What matters is whether your academic qualifications and supervised teaching practice meet the criteria for your nominated occupation.
AITSL does not fast-track applications. Submit early, submit completely, and make sure every document is correctly certified before you lodge. A single missing or incorrectly certified document can add weeks to the process.
And remember, a positive AITSL outcome is valid for two years. Manage your visa lodgement application according to this and have the assessment expire before you submit yourvisa application.
