The ACWA Skills Assessment is the mandatory skills assessment for overseas community services professionals applying for skilled migration visas to Australia. Administered by the Australian Community Workers Association (ACWA), now operating as Community Work Australia from 7 August 2025, this assessment confirms that your qualifications and experience meet Australian standards for community services work. What Is the ACWA Skills Assessment?
The ACWA Skills Assessment is a formal assessment that is conducted by Community Work Australia (ACWA’s new name) for over seas professional, to see whether or not those skills and competencies are consistent with Australia based standards within the community services industry, including welfare, and social work. All applications are assessed against three criteria: qualification, English language proficiency, and industry experience and currency.
Community Work Australia is the government-approved assessing authority for community services occupations under both the Medium and Long-term Strategic Skills List (MLTSSL) and theShort-term Skilled Occupation List (STSOL). The rebranding from ACWA to Community Work Australia took effect from 7 August 2025. Applications lodged after this date are processed under the Community Work Australia name, though the assessment criteria and process remain the same.
Who Needs the ACWA Skills Assessment in 2026?
The ACWA Skills Assessment is required for overseas professionals who are planning to apply for a skilled migration visa in one of the following nominated occupations. If your occupation falls within this list and you are applying for a points-tested or employer-sponsored visa, the assessment is mandatory before lodging an EOI or visa application.

Important: Social Worker (ANZSCO 272611) is assessed by the Australian Association of Social Workers (AASW), not by ACWA or Community Work Australia. If your nominated occupation is Social Worker, you apply to AASW, not ACWA. Confirm yourANZSCO code before applying to ensure you lodge with the correct assessing authority.
Community Work Australia Qualification Pathways
Community Work Australia assesses qualifications through three pathways depending on your level of qualification and whether your course is accredited.
Pathway 1: ACWA Accredited Qualification
Your qualification is an ACWA-accredited diploma or higher. This is the fastest pathway. Applicants with an accredited qualification are generally deemed to have sufficient industry experience through their field placement requirements and do not need to provide additional work experience evidence separately.
Pathway 2: Recognised Relevant Qualification
Your qualification is a Bachelor’s degree or above qualification which is not an ACWA accredited qualification and which is accredited by the professional body in the source country at a similar level of accreditation to ACWA, equivalent in content, duration and focus to an AQF Level 7 or higher Bachelor’s degree. Applicants with a relevant diploma or higher must also demonstrate a minimum of 1 year full-time (or part-time equivalent) industry experience within the last 4 years.
Pathway 3: Relevant Diploma or Higher
Your qualification is a diploma or higher that is related to community services but is not ACWA-accredited or professionally recognised. The qualification must adequately prepare graduates to perform community work in Australia and typically cover sociology, social and political structures, and community and human services practice. Applicants must demonstrate at least 1 year of relevant post-qualification industry experience within the last 4 years.
RPL caution: ACWA accepts a maximum of 40%Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) credit toward a qualification. If more than 40% of your qualification was completed through RPL, the qualification will not be recognised. Additionally, short qualifications such as graduate certificates and graduate diplomas must follow a relevant undergraduate degree to be considered sufficient.
English Language Requirements for Community Services Migration
All applicants must demonstrate English language proficiency unless they are exempt. Exemption applies if you completed all secondary and tertiary education delivered and assessed in English in one of the following countries: Australia, United Kingdom, Ireland, United States of America, Canada, or New Zealand.
Accepted English test results are valid for 3 years from the test date. For IELTS, Community Work Australia accepts multiple test results as long as they are from within a 12-month period. From 7 August 2025, employment evidence can no longer be used to demonstrate English proficiency.

Documents Required for the Community Work Australia Assessment
Submit the following documents with your application. All documents must be colour scans of originals. Certified copies are not required for online applications, but all scans must be clear and high quality.

- Valid passport or government-issued photo ID
- Academic transcripts and qualification certificates for all qualifications claimed
- Course outline or curriculum showing subject content and duration for non-accredited qualifications
- English language test results where required
- If appointing a migration agent: a signed Agent Authorisation Form
- If applicable: evidence of professionalregistration or membership in your country of training
Applicants Claiming Work Experience
- Employment references on company letterhead describing specific community services duties performed
- Evidence of paid employment: payslips, bank statements, or a third-party employment verification
- CV covering all relevant work history with employer names, dates, and duties
Note: From 7 August 2025, employment can no longer be used as evidence of English language proficiency. Employment evidence is still required to demonstrate industry experience and currency separately.
