The General Skills pathway is the most commonly used route for overseas IT professionals with recognised ICT degrees. The RPL pathway applies when formal ICT qualifications are absent or insufficient, it requires two detailed project reports in addition to employment reference letters. As of April 2025, ACS now allows applicants to nominate up to three ANZSCO occupation codes in a single application for one fixed fee.

ACS added new occupation codes in early 2025 including Data Scientist, DevOps Engineer, and Cyber Security Engineer. For these newer codes, vendor certifications may be required alongside the standard qualification and employment evidence. Always verify your occupation’s current list status on the Department of Home Affairs website before submitting list membership changes without advance notice.
What ACS Checks During the ACS Skills Assessment for ICT Professionals
ACS evaluates IT professionals across three areas in every application, qualification comparability, ICT content percentage, and work experience relevance. All three must meet the required standard for your nominated occupation.
Qualification Comparability
ACS checks whether your degree is comparable to an Australian ICT qualification under the AQF. Each course unit is assessed individually to determine whether it counts as an ICT professional unit. The output will either say Major ICT, Minor ICT or Insufficient ICT, the more points received from the classification of your qualification. This determines your necessary amount of relevant work experience required.
Work Experience Relevance
Your work episodes will be examined based on the required skill level and role required by theANZSCO code you choose to nominate. You should only include employment which is paid, works at least 20 hours a week and was obtained after the age of 18. Pre-qualification experience or internships as unpaid employment and work as a teacher not at diploma level are not included. Concurrent work episodes will be examined by comparing the two separate time periods and a more favourable outcome will be selected while the second episode will only be documented not also taken into account.
ICT Content Percentage
For degrees to qualify as an ICT major, at least 33% of a bachelor’s program or 50% of a diploma must consist of ICT units. If your degree falls below these thresholds, ACS classifies it as a Minor or Insufficient qualification, which means additional years of work experience are required, or the RPL pathway becomes necessary.
Documents Required for ACS Skills Assessment
Every IT professionals applying through ACS must submit the following. ACS will not proceed with assessment until the full document suite is verified, additional documents cannot be added after submission.
- Two forms of photo identification:passport bio-data page is primary; secondary ID is also required
- Academic transcripts and degree certificates: certified copies, translated into English if not originally in English
- Employment reference letters: one per employer, on official letterhead, signed by an authorised person, confirming dates in DD/MM/YYYY format, hours per week, employment status, and specific ICT duties
- Payment evidence: minimum two types per employment episode: tax records, payslips, superannuation documents, or bank statements showing salary deposits

- Vendor certifications: required for newer occupation codes including DevOps Engineer, Data Scientist, and Cyber Security Engineer
ACS does not accept employment contracts, offer letters, appointment letters, or position descriptions as employment evidence. These confirm a job offer, not the actual duties performed. Submitting them delays assessment and may result in a request for further information.
ACS Assessment Timeline and Outcome
For applications that do not require additional documentation, ACS targets a four to six-week processing time. Priority processing, available only for applicants with an Australian visa deadline within 12 weeks, delivers outcomes in as little as 15 working days and carries an additional fee.
ACS issues outcomes in PDF format. A suitable outcome is valid for two years from the date of issue.
