What Is the Diploma of Associate Engineer Under Engineers Australia?
Engineers Australia uses the term Engineering Associate to describe professionals who hold a two-year AQF Level 6 Advanced Diploma or Associate Degree in engineering. This is the minimum academic qualification Engineers Australia accepts for migration skills assessment. A Diploma of Associate Engineer sits below the Engineering Technologist category (three-year degree, Sydney Accord) and the Professional Engineer category (four-year degree,Washington Accord).
Engineering associates: support engineering teams, carry out tests, undertake projects under guidance and within specified engineering codes and standards, prepare and analyse technical drawings, feasibility studies, manage technical operations within a specific engineering area and provide a pragmatic, practical, codes and standards input rather than designing entire systems.
Dublin Accord: The Diploma of Associate Engineer qualification is recognised internationally under the Dublin Accord, which covers two-year diploma and associate degree programs. Diploma of Associate Engineer Assessment Pathways in 2026
Engineers Australia assesses Diploma of Associate Engineer applicants through two pathways. Which one applies to you depends entirely on whether your specific program is accredited by Engineers Australia.
Pathway 1: Australian Qualification Pathway (Accredited Programs Only)
From 1 September 2024, only qualifications accredited by Engineers Australia are eligible for assessment under the Australian qualification pathway. If your Advanced Diploma or Associate Degree in engineering is from an Engineers Australia-accredited program delivered by a Registered Training Organisation (RTO), you can apply directly without submitting a CDR.
Critical 2026 Update: Many Australian RTO-delivered programs are not yet on the accredited list following the September 2024 policy change. Engineers Australia is actively working with RTOs to progress accreditation, but timeframes vary. Before assuming your qualification is accredited, confirm your specific program on the Engineers Australia accredited programs register.
Pathway 2: CDR Pathway (Non-Accredited Qualifications)
If you hold a Diploma of Associate Engineer from an unaccredited programme, then you need to apply through the CDR route. This covers overseas qualifications not captured under theDublin Accord, and Australian RTO qualifications that have not yet been accredited.
The assessment is against the Engineering Associate competency standards; in order to demonstrate this, you will need to prepare three Career Episodes, a Summary Statement, and CPD that will attest your practical technical competency at Engineering Associate level under the CDR pathway.
Important distinction: The Engineering Associate CDR is assessed against different competency standards than the Professional Engineer CDR. Career Episodes for Engineering Associate must demonstrate hands-on technical application and practical engineering work, not system design or independent engineering judgement at the Professional Engineer level. Submitting Career Episodes written to the wrong competency standard is a common cause of negative outcomes.
The September 2024 Changes and the Interim CDR Arrangement
The September 2024 policy change created a significant gap for students who enrolled in non-accredited RTO programs before 1 September 2024. To address this, Engineers Australia introduced an interim CDR arrangement specifically for Civil Engineering Draftsperson applicants.
- The interim arrangement applies only to applicants enrolled in or who completed their program before 1 September 2024
- It applies specifically to the occupation ofCivil Engineering Draftsperson (ANZSCO 312211) for migration purposes only
- Under this arrangement, two of the three Career Episodes must demonstrate competencies as a Civil Engineering Draftsperson
- This interim arrangement is only available until December 2026 and will not be extended beyond that date
- Engineers Australia is working with RTOs to support timely progression through the accreditation process
If You are Affected: Applicants who enrolled before 1 September 2024 in a non-accredited program should act before December 2026 to use the interim CDR arrangement. After December 2026, these applicants must hold an accredited qualification or apply through the standard CDR pathway under whatever their qualification supports.
Documents Required for Engineering Associate Migration Assessment

CDR Pathway Only
- Three Career Episodes demonstrating Engineering Associate level competency, each 1,000 to 2,500 words, first person, numbered paragraphs
- Summary Statement mapping each Career Episode paragraph to the Engineering Associate Stage 1 competency elements
- CPD record in tabular format covering a minimum of 3 years, maximum one A4 page
- For the Civil Engineering Draftsperson interim arrangement: additional documentation confirming enrollment date and RPL, credit transfer, or entry requirement components where applicable
Application Ready Standard: Engineers Australia requires a complete, decision-ready application at the time of lodgement. If gaps are identified, you have one opportunity of 30 days to address them. Submitting an incomplete CDR is the most common cause of application delays across all Engineering Associate applicants.
